Quick answer: planning a Marrakech to Sahara desert trip means crossing the High Atlas first. Morocco’s two major dune seas are Erg Chebbi, next to the village of Merzouga in the south-east, where dunes rise to about 150 m, and Erg Chigaga, near M’Hamid in the south, the country’s largest dune sea. The road leaves Marrakech over the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,205 m) towards Ouarzazate. The dunes are too far for a day trip: our shortest Merzouga route takes three days, one way from Marrakech to Fes. If you only have one day, the Agafay desert near Marrakech is a rocky landscape rather than sand dunes.
Where the Sahara dunes are, seen from Marrakech
| Destination | What it is | Key facts |
|---|---|---|
| Merzouga / Erg Chebbi | Dunes beside the village of Merzouga | Dunes up to about 150 m; the erg runs about 28 km north to south and 5–7 km wide; Merzouga is about 35 km south-east of Rissani |
| Erg Chigaga | Morocco’s largest erg | Some dunes over 50 m; about 56 km from the village of M’Hamid El Ghizlane |
| Zagora | Draa Valley town on the way south | Known for its “Tombouctou 52 jours” sign (now a mural); a hot desert climate with recorded summer highs of 44.9 °C |
| Agafay | A rocky desert near Marrakech | Not the Sahara: stony hills rather than sand dunes |
The route over the High Atlas
Routes from Marrakech to the dunes cross the High Atlas. The main route uses the Tizi n’Tichka pass, part of National Route 9, which links Marrakech with Ouarzazate. GPS puts the summit at 2,205 m; a sign at the top still shows an older 2,260 m.
Typical stops along the way:
- Ait Benhaddou, a fortified earthen village (ksar) listed by UNESCO in 1987, about 30 km from Ouarzazate
- Ouarzazate, nicknamed the “Door of the Desert” and home to Atlas Studios
- The Draa Valley and its kasbahs, on the way to Zagora
- The Dades and Todra gorges, on the way to Merzouga

One way or a loop? Our 3- and 4-day routes end in Fes. That suits travellers continuing north or flying home from Fes, and avoids driving the same road twice. Every tour is a private car with your own driver; the driver isn’t a tour guide. Compare all our private tours from Marrakech.
Choosing a desert camp
Desert camps near the dunes offer overnight stays and camel treks. In 2019 the authorities closed unlicensed camps around Merzouga because of waste and littering problems, so choose an established, licensed camp.
When to go
The desert edge gets extremely hot in summer; Zagora’s recorded summer highs reach 44.9 °C. The cooler months make long drives and nights in the dunes more comfortable.
Can you do a Sahara day trip from Marrakech?
Not to the Sahara dunes. Erg Chebbi and Erg Chigaga lie well beyond the High Atlas, in the far south-east and south. For desert scenery in one day, the option near Marrakech is the Agafay desert, a rocky landscape close to the city.
FAQ
How far is the Sahara from Marrakech?
The dunes are on the far side of the High Atlas: Erg Chebbi near Merzouga in the south-east, and Erg Chigaga near M’Hamid in the south. That’s why the trips take several days.
Merzouga or Zagora: which should I choose?
Merzouga gives you Erg Chebbi’s high dunes (up to about 150 m). The Zagora route runs through the Draa Valley towards Erg Chigaga, Morocco’s largest erg, which is more remote.
Is Agafay the Sahara?
No. Agafay is a rocky desert near Marrakech with no big sand dunes. It’s a good choice if you only have an afternoon or evening.
Can I end my desert trip in Fes instead of returning to Marrakech?
Yes. Our 3-day and 4-day desert tours run one way from Marrakech to Fes.
