Distances and times for Essaouira and Casablanca are from our routes page.
1. Ourika Valley
The Ourika Valley follows the Ourika River into the High Atlas, about 30 km from Marrakech. The paved road ends at Setti Fatma, the starting point for walks to the valley’s waterfalls, and Tnine-de-l’Ourika holds a market every Monday. It’s an easy mountain trip with a short drive. Read our guide to the Ourika Valley from Marrakech or see the Atlas Mountains & Ourika Valley day trip.
2. Agafay desert
Agafay is a rocky desert about 30 km south of Marrakech: stony hills and plains with High Atlas views, not sand dunes. Camps there offer sunset dinners, quad biking and camel rides. Choose it if you want desert scenery in an afternoon or evening rather than a multi-day trip.
3. Imlil and the Toubkal foothills
Imlil is a small village at about 1,800 m, at the end of the tarmac road beyond Asni. It’s the usual base for walks towards Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa, and the place where hikers hire mountain guides and mules. Climbing Toubkal itself takes more than a day. The UK government notes that altitude sickness is a risk in parts of Morocco.
4. Essaouira
The Medina of Essaouira has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2001. It’s a fortified Atlantic port with ramparts and a fishing harbour. At about 190 km (roughly 2 h 30) each way, a day trip works but fills the whole day. See our Marrakech to Essaouira day trip.
5. Ouzoud Waterfalls
The Ouzoud Falls, in Azilal Province about 150 km north-east of Marrakech, drop about 110 m in three tiers, and Barbary macaques live around them. It’s a long day with plenty of driving. See our Ouzoud Waterfalls day trip.
6. Ait Benhaddou (and Ouarzazate)
The Ksar of Aït-Ben-Haddou, a fortified earthen village on the old caravan route, has been UNESCO-listed since 1987 and has appeared in films including Lawrence of Arabia and Gladiator. It’s about 30 km from Ouarzazate, on the far side of the High Atlas, reached over the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,205 m). As a day trip it’s very long; it also fits naturally on the way to the Sahara.
7. Casablanca
Casablanca is about 240 km (roughly 2 h 40) from Marrakech by road, and also linked by train. As a day trip it’s mainly a city visit. If you’re flying in or out of Casablanca, it can be simpler to see it on your arrival or departure day.
Too far for a day trip
| Destination | Why it doesn’t work in a day | Better option |
|---|---|---|
| Sahara dunes (Merzouga / Erg Chebbi) | Far beyond the High Atlas in south-east Morocco | A multi-day trip, e.g. our 3-day Marrakech to Fes route via the Sahara |
| Fes | About 530 km, roughly 6 h each way by road | Stay at least two nights, or take the train |
| Chefchaouen | Beyond Fes; Fes → Chefchaouen is a further ~200 km | Visit from Fes or Tangier |
How to choose between the best day trips from Marrakech
- Short on time or travelling with young children: Ourika or Agafay; both are about 30 km away.
- Mountains and walking: Imlil (and remember the altitude).
- The sea and a historic medina: Essaouira.
- One big natural sight: Ouzoud.
- History and kasbahs: Ait Benhaddou, ideally as part of a longer route.
