Quick answer: going to Ait Benhaddou from Marrakech means crossing the High Atlas on the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,205 m) to the Ouarzazate region; the ksar is about 30 km from Ouarzazate. Ait Benhaddou is a fortified earthen village (ksar) on the old caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech, on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1987, and a film location for Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator and Game of Thrones. A day trip is possible but very long; staying a night nearby, or seeing it on the way to the Sahara, is more comfortable.

Getting to Ait Benhaddou from Marrakech: the Tizi n’Tichka road
The road from Marrakech towards Ouarzazate is part of National Route 9 and crosses the High Atlas at the Tizi n’Tichka pass, one of the few routes across the range. GPS puts the summit at 2,205 m (a sign at the top still shows 2,260 m). It’s a mountain road with many bends, so allow time for breaks, especially if anyone gets carsick.
