Journey 140km north along the Atlantic coast to Safi, Morocco’s pottery capital and a city with its own Portuguese colonial history rivaling Essaouira’s. While Essaouira’s medina is famous for woodwork, Safi dominates Moroccan ceramics—the distinctive blue-and-white pottery found throughout the country originates here, crafted from local clay using techniques unchanged since the 16th century.

Safi’s history parallels Essaouira’s: both were Portuguese strongholds in the 1500s (Safi was occupied 1508-1541), both have massive sea-facing fortresses, and both are working fishing ports. But while Essaouira became an artists’ colony, Safi became an industrial pottery center. The result is a more authentic, less touristy experience where you can watch master potters throw clay in workshops that supply the entire kingdom.

The drive north follows the rugged coastline through the Haha region, passing small fishing villages and argan forests. Safi’s Kechla (Portuguese fortress), the Colline des Potiers (Potters’ Hill), and the lively fish market make this an essential excursion for those interested in Moroccan crafts, history, or seeking a less polished alternative to the Essaouira tourist circuit.
